By Zack & Thomas aka The Bar Bois
WHAT’S UP, NERDS?!?!?
This week the Bar Bois are taking over the newsletter because the dorks in retail ran out of ideas and also I volunteered, so now you’re stuck reading about beers I think are cool.
As some folks may know, in my limited free time not running the bar, I’ve been in and out of bands playing music (mostly percussion) for the majority of my life. Playing drums, much like tending bar, is sweaty, grueling work, and having a cold, refreshing bev or 3 makes a huge difference behind the kit. Coincidentally, almost nothing pairs better with loud music than some good crafty beers (or alternatives, you do you). All that said, here’s a list of cool beers I like paired with cool tunes I also like.
Perennial Brewing Saison de Lis paired w/ “At the Speed of a Yellow Bullet” by Head Automatica
My wife’s family hails from St. Louis, which is where I first came across this absolutely beautiful saison. Crisp, slightly spicy, a hint of fruitiness, and an addition of chamomile flowers to the brew makes this one of my all time favorite hot weather beers. Vibrant and fun, much like Head Automatica’s first record, which is always a solid party starter.
Round Trip Gizza Pils paired w/ “I’m Like You” by Heathersett
Georgia’s craft beer scene has us a bit spoiled with options, but Round Trip’s lagers are (in my humble opinion) somewhat slept on, I can’t think of a single beer in general from them that’s left me disappointed. Gizza is a pilsner brewed with New Zealand Motueka hops, imparting some zingy (is “zingy” a word?) citrus. Super crushable, tasty as hell, and pairs extremely well with shameless self-promotion (Heathersett II now streaming on most major music platforms)
Green Bench Sunshine City paired w/ “Remedy” by Hot Water Music
Sometimes cool things come from Florida. Key lime pie. Theme parks. Stephen Root. Also Green Bench. I’ll talk anyone’s ear off about Green Bench’s wonderfully crafted beer program. In fact, back when I got my start in the industry, Sunshine City was one of the IPAs that made me fall in love with the style, partially because Creature Comforts’ Tropicalia was impossible for me to get my hands on. Now, whenever I see something from them on a tap list or on a shelf, I grab it without hesitation, and you should too. Grab a can of their West Coast IPA from the shop or come get a pour of Sunshine City on draft at the bar. Goes down smooth with one of Thomas and my favorite bands, Hot Water Music from Gainesville, Florida.
Hey, hi, howdy, Thomas here and I’ll be taking the reins for a quick jaunt into two other genres, if you will… ciders and THC seltzers because if you know me I’m all about chill, and I love to imbibe both. The two are extremely refreshing in this sweltering heat, and for me helps push it to the wayside. I will also be pairing them with some tunes they fit well with to boot.
Rekorderlig Pear Cider paired w/ “Cruel Summer” by Ace of Base
This is the first cider where I took a sip and went WOW… now that’s what a cider should taste like. A perfect blend of tart and sweetness (more sweetness because that’s what I want with a cider), and an intense pear flavor… it’s literally like biting into a pear; it’s refreshment at its finest. Cool trick, try it with a lime to make your taste buds explode. I’m sure Ace of Base, a well known Swedish band, savors Rekorderlig during these oh so Cruel Summers.
Crescent 9 Raspberry Lime THC Seltzer paired w/ “Crumblin’ Erb by OutKast
Crescent was one of the first innovators in the THC seltzer world. Its crisp raspberry lime flavors are sweet and tangy and a fantastic duo, just like Kast. With its laid back, funky flavor and feel refreshing is an understatement and as the above mentioned, my all time favorite group, I like the way it makes me move.
