California Road Trip Continued

Sep 15, 2023

We’re continuing the theme of tasty California wines from some of our favorite producers. California isn’t all Chardonnay and Cab - so many producers are making crisp, refreshing white wines, sparkling reds(?!) and quaffable rosés. Trek on with us as we resume our journey through the tasty wines of the Golden State.

MASSICAN ANNIA
This wine goes to show that not all California white wines are full-bodied, oaky, and buttery. Winemaker Dan Petroski chose to focus on Mediterranean varieties with his Massican line. Annia is a blend of Tocai Friulano, Ribolla Gialla, and Chardonnay. This crunchy, crisp white wine has notes of green apple, honeysuckle, lemon zest, and peach with a slight sea spray undertone. You’ll want to pair this bottle with seafood, roast chicken, or an evening on the porch.

HOUSE OF BROWN CHARDONNAY
The House of Brown wines are the second label of the famous Brown Estate, the first Black-owned winery in Napa Valley. They created this label to be easy-drinking and accessible year-round, while also maintaining sustainable practices. Fun fact: this wine is also vegan! Packed with ripe tropical fruit (guava, pineapple, and melon) with a creamy core. Think key lime pie in a glass!

ROOTDOWN CELLARS ES OKAY ROSE
Rootdown Cellars gets its inspiration from the soil - the essence of organic winemaking. The Es Okay line is all about fun - after all, wine is just fermented grape juice, right? This blend of Grenache and Pinot Gris is the best of both worlds - strawberry, watermelon, and savory rhubarb lead the palate to a pleasing fresh finish. Pair this with a good time!

CARBONISTE ROUGE BRUT
Dan and Jacqueline Person created Carboniste so they could reimagine California sparkling wines and this wine does just that. It’s a blend of Merlot and Albariño, combined after fermentation. The Albariño gives the deep, dark fruit from Merlot a nice lift of acidity, making this wine super approachable for any occasion. As we inch closer to fall, this wine pairs incredibly well with heartier meals - think harvest bowls and beef stew.
$31.99; available at Krog

Iconic Sidekick Merlot
Iconic’s mission is simple and straightforward: to make wines they want to drink. And isn't this how it should be? This Merlot is delicious - juicy red plum with hints of baking spices and earthiness. Not too heavy, not too light - perfect as we transition into fall. You'll love this one!
$17.99; available at Krog & West End
