Let's Sit Outside and Sip on Wild Farmhouse Ales

May 18, 2023

Farmhouse ales as we know them today come from a long tradition and lineage of farmers in Belgium in France that would use excess grains at the end of selling season to brew, cellar and then share or sell these bright and quaffable yet complex wild ales. Studious and historical-minded brewers have been recreating these and running with the style for decades now, and they have always held a unique position among the American beer landscape.

To brew these beers is a labor of love. It's not easy, and the results are not always consistent when working with these kind of wild cultures. But when done expertly, they can be some of the prettiest, most complex ales in the world. Check out some recent arrivals in the category. You won't regret it.

Crooked Stave Colorado Wild Sage
The herbal and floral qualities of this mixed culture wild ale are off the charts. Sage, honey and lemongrass highlight the complex and prickly brettanomyces profile, but it steers clear of acidity. This one truly feels natural, of a place, and of the earth.

SoPro Soul Glo
This pleasant and unassuming Saison is bright and lightly funky. Delicate citrus notes accent a mostly dry mid-palate, and some brett funk kicks in alongside a mild bitterness to close it out. Not too light, not too strong, not too acidic, not too floral. An impressive feat of balance, as the best Saisons are.

Yazoo Grisette
Grisette was historically made to be a table beer, something for day-laborers to drink on their lunch break from working the fields. Yazoo took a decidedly more aggressive approach, maxing out the funk and pushing the cultures into the red, revealing a moderate acidity and deep, complex brettanomyces flavors. The ABV and body remain manageable, but this is no simple table beer.
